Is there a way to change the forum settings so that when you click a link it will open in a new window insted of redirecting the existing page?

Im afraid that most links are set up too stay in the same window.
Most browsers use tabs, as said, right click, open new tab

scroll wheel click typically opens links in new tabs also.
