Is there anyway to remove the silver trim, without removing the airbag?

Yes undo the 3 torx screws on the back of the steering wheel, then 'wiggle' it out

its really easy mate i did mine in carbon wrap look in my project thread ..
do it with the engine running then u can turn the wheel to get at the screws easier

And the rest has already been done.. pics will be available after Ford Fair. (but not of the steering wheel and door handles trim)
