Question about gear mechanism

Hi guys basically iv got a 2010 fiesta 1.6 tdci i was driving down the road and i heard a metalic rattle / snap , i took of the gearknob and the gaitor with the plastics looked in down to the shifter and the large spring to the right had snapped also my gearstick wasnt returning to neautral and felt floopy , i managed to have one made but how are you suppose to get it back on iv tried but it seems impossibke unless i take the whole mechanism out is this an easy job ? Im a bit worried about taking the cables if doesnt look like they come off easy either any advice would be great
