Car will not change down from 3rd to 2nd whilst moving// slack gear linkage

Hi, I'm new here so bare with me 
I drive a 2014 fiesta ZS 1.0 ecoboost 5 speed and Currently having a problem with gear changes, changing up through the gears is completely fine, come down through 5-4-3 is also normal, but when trying to get into 2nd the gear stick will not go in at all.
Been to a local garage and they have had a look and told me that the top gear cable is very slack and that they would need replacing. Does anyone have a guide on how to replace these as i would rather do it myself, and also how to adjust the cable itself?
