Gear Knob thread size?

Strange question I know. The one thing I really don't like about my new car is the length of the gear stick. I am not looking to spend nearly 200 quid on a short shifter, just want the gear knob a bit lower so I am looking to remove around 1-2 inches from the shaft. Does anyone know the thread size of the shaft so I can get a tap and die set to re-thread the shaft after removal of said 1-2 inches?

Thanks for the replies, I will need to get into it on Wednesday, just asked incase anybody knew the size. I'm not fussed about getting a short shifter, it's quite a good gear change on the car, I just want the gear stick to be shorter. It feels a little agricultural at the moment.

Lol the thread may be long so you might be able to make it shorter and still screw a gear nob on

Think it's a metric thread so i'd guess at m12, just need a hacksaw to shorten it and a tap & die set to put the new thread on (easiest way to find out is measure the diameter with a micrometer)

Just got it finished today. I cut two inches off the length, the thread size is M12x1.5mm. It feels so much more positive, slightly shorter throw but mainly looks so much better. All in all, well chuffed and it didn't cost a penny!

Did you remove it or did you do it in situ
