Mental rear parking sensor. (2012 ZS)

Hi all,
Got a query about the parking sensors on my 61 plate Zetec S petrol.
As soon as I stick it in reverse I get the rapid beeps from the speakers, the same as the ones you get just before the continuous 'very close' flatline beep. The sensors work as normal and give the continuous beep when I reverse near something but the rapid beeps are all over the place. It's slightly concerning because I don't feel I can rely on them. The problem is it's really intermittent. It will give rapid beeps for a few seconds then stop then start again. There's no pattern to it so it doesn't match the fault conditions described in the manual. It's almost as if somebody is dancing around behind the car and setting off the sensors or they are hyper sensitive.
I checked all the sensors - power on, no ignition and stuck it in reverse... Every sensor gives the continuous beep when I hold my hand over them individually. I also put my ear against each one and they are all ticking as normal to show they are checking for obstacles. I also tried fiddling with the cables under the bumper to see if there were obstructions or a loose connection.
Every roughly 1 in 10 reverse gear selection it will work perfectly fine. One beep to say the sensors are on then normal operation.
Any ideas on what I can try? It's under dealer warranty still but if I can quick fix it I'd be happy to have a play if it isn't too complex.
Thanks,
