Fiesta Security Flaws

Hi guys, newbie here, wondering if I can get some collective wisdom from some experienced folk like yourself. So here's the story, I live in E16 (Newham), London, in September someone took a crowbar to the lock on my 2012 Zetec S (Petrol) Fiesta, in what I assume was an attempt to steal the vehicle. Obviously the thief was disturbed or something and I suppose I was lucky that all I had was £1000 worth of damage to my car. Fast forward to yesterday and I get a text message from my flat mate saying his 2011 Zetec S (Diesel) has been stolen; it was parked opposite my car.
So my question is this: is there some form of security flaw with the Mark 7 Fiesta? I mean I thought these cars had immobilisers, so how was someone able to drive off with this car? Are Fiestas, or more specifically Zetec Ss, being targeted by criminals, if so why?
I would also like to know what can be done to improve the security of my car, since September I've swapped for a 2013 Zetec (with 1.0L EcoBoost engine) and I still have to park in the same area, is there anything I can do to deter would be thieves from trying to steal my car again?
Would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer, besides telling me to move
John
