Hi,

A question. I have a 2010 fiesta 1.4 diesel Zetec. When I collected it last year I noticed the brakes where spongy. I asked the dealer if this was normal and he said yes, so didn't think any more about it.

I had it serviced at an independent garage in October and and garage told me that they thought that there was a problem with my brakes and that it may be the master cylinder that was the problem.

They had another fiesta that was the same coming in a few days later and would check the brakes on that and get back to me. They got back to me and said that the brakes on that car where not spongy.

Has anyone else had any problems with the brakes?

Hi Jonathon,

Spongy brakes can be down to a number of reasons, first thing to do would be to do a brake fluid change. It could be as simple as a bit of air in the system.

Brake fluids are hygroscopic (water absorbing), which means they absorb moisture from the atmosphere under normal humidity levels, which as I'm sure you will agree, moisture in brake fluid is not a great!

there is no air in the brake system as they kept bleeding them to see if that was the problem.

They obviously thought it was an air issue as they kept bleeding them?

Describe spongy? Mine move very freely approx to the half way point then firm up. This has made me 'over brake' on a few occasions, and I suppose I could describe mine as slightly spongy. I know it's a fluid change and new front pads soon though, and that will 100% be the issue.

Try changing the fluid, and if the pads are getting low, do that.
