Engine making weird sound at low revs when cold

I own a 2010 Ford Fiesta 1.2 - 3 Door (not the most exciting car on here), its only done 25,000 miles but it has a few issues that I hope to get a bit of help with on here. This car has belonged to me and my wife for just over a year, we bought it with 12,000 on the clock, up until a month ago it belonged to her but she has moved on and now its mine.
When I start my car (cold engine) and rev it a little bit (and I mean a LITTLE BIT) I can hear a high pitch whistling / grinding sound. Thats the only way I can think to describe it. The sound is not that loud, in fact you usually can only hear it with the window down. I noticed it not long after we bought the car but it wasnt my car so never thought anything of it. But now I drive the car every day I do notice it and its doing my head in.
You can only hear the noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or reverse gear, and if you increase the revs the noise will disappear. It also seems to stop doing this noise when the car has warmed up, for example if I went for a drive to the shop, by the time I am only way home it wont be doing it....
I am baffled, it doesnt seem to affect the performance in any way, but it is a worry. The car is not due a service for another 6 months, I was going to mention it to the garage then but it would be good to know what it might be.
The car is no longer under warranty.
Thanks for your help!
