Deadlocking

I have a 58 plate Fiesta Zetec and appear to be having trouble activating the deadlock facility when locking my car.
I decided to test deadlocking was working OK as follows.
Left the driver's window fully down, then pressed the lock button on the key fob twice - the indicator lights flashed twice.
I then made sure the key fob was nowhere near the car to ensure no signals from it interfered with anything.
I then leant in through the open window and found I could still open the door using the internal handle.
I repeated this exercise on my wife's 09 plate Focus and the deadlocking worked as I was unable to open the door using the internal handle.
Any ideas on why it's not working on my Fiesta ??
