Tyre choices for lowered Mk7s?

Post by Jamesk07 »

Hi all,

I've got an 11 plate 1.6TDCI Titanium. I've had Ford fit the Eibach springs and it's sitting on 17" rims with 40 profile tyres. It handles a billion times better than when I bought it, it now corners how I feel it should have always cornered. The tyres are Falken FK452 205/40R17 .

What are you guys using on your 17" alloys? Reason I ask is that I've recently had some pothole damage (they're awful here in Kent) and the ride is much firmer now obviously. Would it be possible to get tyres with a 45 or 50 tyre wall in the arches without rubbing now that I have the Eibach springs and 17s? If so, do you think this would make a difference to the overall ride comfort? I realise that a wider tyre wall mean less responsive handling, but I'm not a boy racer, so this isn't a huge problem for me.

I keep looking at the Uniroyal Rainsport 2's which seem to be getting great reviews everywhere. But, these are 40 profile too...

Finally, road noise on motorways has increased and is quite noticeable... Anybody got any tyre recommendations to ease that?

Many thanks in advance for any help, advice or tips given,

James

Wouldn't of thought you'd have a problem with clearance issues but by putting larger profile tyres on your speedo won't be accurate.

Hi DGZS,

Thanks for pointing that out for me, that's not even something I'd begun to consider, so I really appreciate the tip. I wonder if there is any way of knowing how badly affected the speedo will be. I'm sure someone much smarter than me would be able to calculate this. If we're only talking slightly out then I wouldn't mind so much. If it's wildly out then that's more of a problem.

Many thanks,

James

If you google tyre size calculator you can compare different sizes as they work out the difference in diameter. Think they recommend not changing the diameter by more than +/-2.5% when changing wheel/tyre sizes.

You could always downsize to a 195/45/17 tyre. My ST170 wheels had them before i swapped them for 205/40s. A bit less harsh, but made the car handle like a boat in a storm. However, handling isn't an issue for you like you said, so should be fine for you.
