Range, Trip computer

My girlfriend has recently got a 61 plate fiesta 1.25 zetec, the trip shows the car as averaging 35mpg, but with half a tank of fuel the range only shows 100 miles, which cannot be correct, my new fiesta st averages 30mpg and has more than 100 miles on the range with half a tank of fuel. Does anyone know what the problem is the low range reading on the car ? thanks
