Not got one myself but ive heard that they are quite good.
As you say transmit data from obd to software on your smartphone, there are a few apps available, some free some not but I'm sure the payed ones will be free from errrm "alternative sources"

Torque app on android is very good. Works great with a cheapo ELM327 OBD2 adapter from eBay on our Fiesta... Won't connect on my JDM Subaru Legacy :cry:
