What's this for?

I have just become the owner of a 61 reg 1.4 Zetec. My curiosity is towards an aperture in the courtesy/map light panel which looks just the sensor port for the auto climate in my last car. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4xffi ... sp=sharing so my first thought was that it formed a halfway house system with just temperature being auto adjusted. But on poking around in the footwell the heater door can be seen to be cable operated directly by the knob, so no.

Any ideas what the port is for?
